Minnesota Extra Virgin Cold-Pressed Sunflower Oil

Classic Provisions Sunflower OilClassic Provisions is often asked for local olive oil. Local olive oil??? Given our climate, California is about as local as we can get. For a fresh and different option, we are pleased to offer a wonderful alternative; Smude Cold-Pressed Virgin Sunflower Seed Oil. Made locally at the Smude farm in Pierz, MN.

“A couple of years ago, when there was a drought, I was looking for a crop that could grow on poor soils, and I checked into sunflowers,” says Tom Smude, a cattle and feed-crop farmer. The Smude’s grow high-oleic sunflowers, with seeds higher in unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and vitamin E than typical sunflowers. They wanted their oil to fit in with their “eat local; buy local” philosophy.

After the sunflowers are cleaned, de-hulled and separated, the nut meat is run through a screw press that extracts 90 percent of the oil. The cold-press method doesn’t require heat or chemicals, so the natural minerals remain in the oil. Its saturated fat content is lower than olive oil’s by 2 grams. None of the byproducts are wasted. After oil is extracted, the presses extrude high-protein pellets that are added to cattle feed. The hulls are used in chicken and cattle bedding. Stalks are plowed into the soil.
